Medication

Medication sheets are kept in the administration area. The child’s name, medication, dosage and time of administration are to be entered by the parent on the medication sheet for the day the treatment is required. This must be filled out and signed by parents if their child requires medication while at the Centre. A staff member must be informed and counter sign the form. Medications are to be given to a educator caring for that child. Staff administering the medication will sign the form and indicate the time of dosage.

If a child is taken ill while at the Centre, and it becomes necessary to administer emergency medication, the staff member administering the medication will record all relevant details and inform the child’s parents when they arrive to pick up the child.

Prescribed medication, short term

Centre staff can only administer prescription medication in the following circumstances:

ü The medication must be in its original container

ü It must be current

ü It must be made out in the child’s name (not that of a sibling or parent)

Parents are encouraged to ensure that when antibiotics are prescribed for their children, the full course of medication is completed.

Non prescription medication

Non-prescription medications such as decongestants and cough mixtures will not be administered unless specifically prescribed by a medical practitioner. The doctor must provide a letter every time a request is made.

If a child requires a staff member to apply a cream or an ointment, the Centre is unable to apply it unless it is in its original container with a dispensing label attached listing the child as the prescribed person and the directions for use.

Prescribed medication, long term

Where medication for the treatment of long-term conditions or complaints such as asthma or epilepsy is needed, either intermittently or on a continuous basis, the above conditions also apply. In addition, parents should acquaint staff with the particular manifestations of the condition as they apply to their child, including such details as likely severity of attacks; warning signs; methods of acute care etc. A letter from the child’s doctor or specialist is required detailing the medical condition of the child.
